The founding philosophy behind our formulas is what Dr. Gary Cotton, Founder of Best Breed, calls “Common Sense Nutrition.” Common Sense Nutrition means we disregard the usual marketing and cost control techniques often used by the large conglomerate pet food companies and simply develop the healthiest all-natural pet food possible. Each ingredient in our formulas MUST be of the highest quality and MUST be accretive to the overall value of the diet, meaning no animal by-products, cheap fillers, any sort of gluten (e.g., corn gluten), and artificial preservatives, flavors, and colors. At Best Breed, we often say that the difference between our diets and our competitors’ diets is not on the outside of the bag, but is inside the bag. When comparing and contrasting labels of different brands, one can easily decipher that a diet containing low-grade ingredients such as, “chicken by-product meal” or “corn gluten” is subordinate to a diet that contains ingredients such as, “chicken meal” or “brown rice.” But what most pet parents do not realize is that just because a diet has ingredients such as “chicken meal” or “brown rice” listed, doesn’t necessarily mean that the diet is of the highest quality. For example, there are currently many grades of chicken meal, all of which can legally be called “chicken meal” on the ingredient list, but are significantly different in terms of nutritional value and digestibility. Best Breed’s formulas contain only the highest grade of ingredients available, helping ensure the health and vitality of your faithful friend.
PROTEINS – Best Breed only uses premium, all-natural sources of protein, including the flesh and organ meat from named sources such as “chicken” and “catfish.” All of Best Breed’s formulas are meat-based. And we only use meat meals, such as “chicken meal” versus just “chicken” or “real chicken,” which contain up to 70% water. Using such meals ensures that each diet’s MEAT protein does not shrink below the weights of non-meat ingredients after water is removed during the cooking process.
FATS – Fats used in our formulas are derived from wholesome sources such as chicken fat, flaxseed, and canola oil – all are highly digestible sources of energy and rich in essential fatty acids like Linoleic and Alpha Linoleic acids.
CARBOHYDRATES – We only use wholesome grains, including brown rice, oats, and barley - all are rich in essential vitamins and nutrients and serve as quality sources of fiber.
VITAMINS & CHELATED MINERALS – Best Breed’s formulas are supplemented with balanced levels of vitamins and minerals to ensure healthy growth and development and a properly functioning body. As minerals are difficult for most pets to absorb, Best Breed only uses “Chelated” minerals. The use of chelated minerals improves the absorption rate of certain essential nutrients into your pet’s bloodstream.
